“Relief for Haiti” Drive

October 10th –November 10th 2008

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) is engaging the community to take part in the recovery efforts for the storm victims in Haiti. MXGM is coordinating an emergency campaign to collect vital supplies. The launch of our Campaign, “Relief for Haiti” is October 10, 2008. We invite you or your organization to participate in this effort.

In recent weeks, Haiti was hit by four strong tropical storms, consecutively. The coast and interior of Haiti is severely battered, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes. Buildings, houses and schools throughout the country are damaged or destroyed. More than 1000 people are confirmed dead, and up to 3,000,000 face starvation.

The hurricane season is not over. International humanitarian aid is limited, and has not reached some of the most devastated areas. The death toll is rising, as thousands of people are reported missing, and mainstream media is not reporting this tragedy.

The biggest hydroelectric dam on the island has broken causing the port of Gonaives to go under water, damaging the Artibonite Valley, and contaminating the water supply. The southeastern agricultural region of Mapou is now isolated due to flooded roads. The drinkable water supply is contaminated by rains, mud and dead bodies in stagnant water. Surviving victims are faced with a raging diarrhea epidemic and an immediate threat of diseases.
According to the Haitian Women for Haitian Refugees (HWHR), the most urgent need is for water buckets, water purification tablets, and first aid supplies.
