The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) cordially invites you to attend our 15th year celebration and fund raiser to be held on Friday May 16, 2008 from 6:30 – 9:30 pm at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Labor Center located at 310 West 43rd street between 8th and 9th Avenues.

For 15 years the MXGM has worked tirelessly to defend the human rights of people of African descent. To date we have raised over $100,000 for political prisoners in the United States; we have organized an ongoing cop watch and know your rights program to combat the proliferation of police brutality in our communities; we work with young people on a weekly basis, through our New Afrikan Scouts program, to teach those youth about the richness of African culture and the resistance movements that shape our history.

Please join us for an evening - hosted by Asha Bandele - of music and performances as well as an amazing silent Art Auction featuring prominent visual artists as we celebrate our work and honor some fellow community activists that have supported the mission and goals of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement.

Lawyers Soffiyah Ellijah and Tarif Michael Warren along with entertainers Mos Def and Talib Kweli, and Councilman Charles Barron will be receiving our first Grassroots Community Award. The key note speaker will be Dhoruba Bin Wahad.

People's Outrage At Sean Bell Verdict
People's Self Defense Campaign (PSDC)
Peoples Justice Coalition Takes the Streets
The P.J. Coalition Took the Streets in Protest

Brief summary of Friday April 25th

  • Peoples Justice Rally for Justice for Sean Bell & All Victims of Police Brutality
  • 2 arrests following formal march

Following yesterday morning's announcement of Judge Cooperman's "not guilty on all counts" acquittal verdict of 3 of the 5 NYPD officers involved in the murder of Sean Bell, hundreds gathered in Queens to express their outrage.

Disgusted by the trial process (determined by 1 judge rather than a jury), and the unjust outcome, the PEOPLE'S JUSTICE rally began at 5:30pm by the Queens DA's office, with family members speaking of having lost loved ones to police brutality, and others speaking of personal experiences being victimized by law enforcement violence, including: Nicholas Heyward, Sr. spoke of his son - Nicholas Heyward, Jr. - murdered by the NYPD; members of Jayson Tirado's family; Juanita Young, mother of Malcolm Ferguson and founder of Parents Against Police Brutality; representatives of the Bushwick 32 case; Desis Rising Up & Moving, linking the struggle against police brutality to the struggle against the criminalization of immigrants.

In addition to justice for Sean Bell and other specific cases, Peoples Justice is calling for an end to racist & militarized policing of our communities; the creation of a permanent independent prosecutor for all cases of police brutality in NYC; and increased efforts for community control of our safety through creation of community Cop Watch patrols and Know Your Rights work.

A Recent Statement from Assata
Our Heroes

On July 16, 2007 our mother, sister, comrade and revolutionary s/hero turned 60 with a million dollar bounty on her head issued by the US Government. The “Happy Birthday Assata Campaign” kicked off a national tour featuring a traveling birthday card for Assata signed by thousands of activists, students, educators, journalists, artists, and freedom fighters nationwide. The tour featured Angela Davis, Mos Def, Sonia Sanchez and included a Detroit city council resolution honoring Assata.

The following is a recent statement from our mother, sister, comrade Assata Shakur:

Our Hero Assata Shakur
A Message from Our Hero Assata Shakur
First of all, let me say thank you, to the many people who have helped me to celebrate my 60th birthday. Thank you for your beautiful birthday cards and for your warm and eloquent messages. Thank you for your activism, your radiant energy and most of all for your love. I am sincerely grateful for your support and for your commitment to social justice, truth and freedom.

It is somehow surprising for me to realize that I have lived on this planet for 60 years. I never imagined that I would live this long. Some of those years were very hard years, other years were happier, but I have never forgotten who I am or where I came from. For as long as I can remember, I was acutely aware of my oppression and of the oppression of my people.

In some ways it was easier for my generation. Racism was blatant and obvious. The “Whites Only” signs let us know clearly, what we were up against. Not much has changed, but the system of lies and tricknology is much more sophisticated. Today young people have to be highly informed and acutely analytical, or they will be swept up into a whirlpool of lies and deception.

Freedom, justice and liberty are words that are thrown around a lot in the United States, but for most of us, it is empty rhetoric. With each and every passing day the country becomes more repressive, the police more viciously aggressive and the so-called constitutional guarantees obliterated by scare tactics. The so-called ‘Conservatives’ are only interested in conserving their privileges and power and helping their rich friends to become richer. Black ‘Conservatives’ serve their “masters” and are basically interested in grinning, shuffling and ‘Uncle Tomming’ all the way to the bank. This is the most corrupt administration that has ever existed. They have blatantly stolen not millions, but billions of dollars. They are actively seeking to preserve the old colonial order with a new face, where the oppressed people of Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Middle East are expected to suffer happily, and sing praises to imperialism to the tune of the star spangled banner.

MXGM New Afrikan Scouts
Programs / Initiatives
MXGM's New Afrikan Scouts
MXGM's New Afrikan Scouts
The New Afrikan Scouts (NAS) is a dynamic national youth program sponsored by the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement consisting of youth (male and female) of Afrikan descent who ages range from 6-17 years old.  NAS was formed to give identity, direction and purpose to our youth and to combat some of the obstacles placed in the paths of our children. By working with the NAS, we are making a sincere effort to instill discipline and an understanding of what it means to go through the stages of childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. We are helping our youth rise to meet the challenges of being young in these times and in this place.

Our activities include basic survival techniques (both rural and urban), drilling, arts and crafts, political education and other cultural/community activities. Through their involvement in the NAS our youth will develop their sense of self-esteem, community awareness, and overall commitment to the liberation of our people. We also hope to encourage in our Scouts a love 'supreme for our families, elders, ancestors, communities and all Afrikan people.

Our fortitude and seriousness will be greatly enhanced by the support of everyone - the parents, the community and the Black Nation. If you, your child, or someone you know are between the ages of 6 and 17, have them join the New Afrikan Scouts! Stop the Violence Against Afro-Colombian Communities
International

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) stands in solidarity with the Afro-Colombian community in support of the "No More Victims" March in Washington, D.C. Saturday, March 6, 2008. We condemn the systematic violence and displacement of Afro-descendent communities in Colombia at the hands of all the partisan parties – including government, paramilitary, and rebel forces – to the long-standing civil conflict in Colombia.

We are particularly sensitive to the issues of forced internal displacement taking place in the constitutionally recognized Afro-Colombian communities at the hands of the Uribe government and the paramilitary forces. We understand that these communities are being displaced as part of a program of ethnic cleansing to secure the strategic natural resources of the Afro-Colombian collective communities for private appropriation and profit realization on the world market. Our sensitivity grows from our own struggles against forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of majority Afro-descendent communities in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast states of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama following Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. We therefore stand opposed to the proposed Free Trade Agreement between the United States and the Uribe government and to US military initiatives like Plan Colombia, both of which underscore the displacement of Afro-Colombian communities.

The right of Afro-Colombian self-determination must be respected by all the forces of Colombian society and the Colombian government must do all it can to ensure that the human rights of Afro-Colombians, including observing the rights of internally displaced persons and the international covenants against structural racism that permeates Colombian society.

From one oppressed Afro-descendent community to another, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement says, "Free the Land and Stop the Genocide of Afrikan peoples!"

Long Live the Cuban Revolution – Viva Fidel Castro
International
MXGM in support of Cuba and Revolution
MXGM in support of Cuba and Revolution

The Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) applauds the historic contributions of Cuban Revolutionary leader Fidel Castro Ruz. We stand firm in support of the new leadership of the Cuban revolution in its quest to deepen democracy, increase production, and resist US imperialist aggression. Cuba has been a steadfast supporter of Afrikan liberation struggles in Afrika and in the United States empire and deserves the support of Afrikan people all around the world against those who seek to turn Cuba back into a playground for the rich.

Under Fidel’s exemplary leadership Cuba consistently demonstrated the true meaning of solidarity in support of the Afrikan revolution. This solidarity is best exemplified in Angola, where Cuba stood toe to toe with the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola or MPLA from 1975 – 1988, to deliver several crushing defeats to the armies of apartheid South Africa and the CIA backed forces of white supremacy and imperialist reaction that lead to the liberation of Namibia, the end of counterrevolutionary terror in Mozambique and Botswana, and the end of white minority rule in Azania (South Africa).
