Hands off Cuba, Hands off Assata

The historic relationship between the Cuban Revolution and the Freedom movements in the US is very rich and proud.  The Freedom Movements of the United States have charted their own paths of relating with the people of Cuba.  We have shared resources and other forms of solidarity through out the years.  This history includes the welcoming of President Fidel Castro to Harlem in 1960 by Malcolm X, Cuba’s military assistance to the people of Angola and it’s stance against the apartheid regime in South Africa. We are indebted to the Cuban people for their solidarity and friendship with African people, in Africa and throughout the Diaspora, and for providing sanctuary to our beloved Sister Assata Shakur

The support given to Assata by Cuba continues to be a point of contention for the United States Government.  Assata Shakur represents a sacred part of our lives and the struggle of African people for freedom in the US.  We recognize the pressure put on Cuba by the US government is a heavy load. We proudly applaud Cuba for standing firm in defending our sister.  The progressive people of the world understand and support the fundamental sovereignty of Cuba.  The actions of the United States and New Jersey state governments represent a continued attack on the sovereignty of the Cuban nation and its right to grant political asylum to those it believes are deserving of it.  We will continue to defend Cuba's right to self determination and voice our support for the right of Cuba to grant political asylum to those freedom fighters currently being protected through their political asylum status.

We re-affirm our commitment to the people of Cuba and the principles of the Cuban Revolution.  We stand firm in our defense of our freedom fighters within Cuba’s borders.  We urge you to join with us in solidarity with the Cuban people and in solidarity with Assata Shakur.

US hands Off Cuba, Keep Assata Free!

Statement from Dr. Mutulu Shakur on Malcolm X Festival
Events
mutuluflyer2.jpg

May19th is an important Date in the New Afrikan, Pan-African, Black history of struggle that we must never let slip into oblivion.  It is the birthday of OMOWALE MALCOLMX, EL HAIJ MALIK SHABAZZ - Our teacher who taught us to embrace Global Pan-Africanism while at the same time as we evolved into proud New Afrikans.

For the past 20 years, New Afrikan people have honored Malcolm X in Atlanta.  By holding this festival, we continue an important tradition – educating future generations about his principles and values.

It is a process that must be maintained in light of the elated feeling among our people with the election of Barack Hussein Obama as president of the United States.  In this euphoric state of mind we must never forget our Black prince, Malcolm X, who educated us in the science of political power – nationally and internationally, and for that, weare what we’ve become today.

NAPO/MXGM Statement in Support of N’COBRA

MXGM Principle of Unity - We demand Reparations, or repayment for four hundred years of slavery colonialism and oppression of our people in the United States of America.

The New Afrikan Peoples Organization (NAPO) and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) solute the continued work of N’COBRA in demanding reparations from the US empire. The work of N’COBRA has never been more important as the U.S.continues to deny the historic and current conditions of Afrikans in the U.S. as an outcome of the exploitation and genocidal acts enacted against Afrikans by the government in collusion with its white citizenry. These crimes, too numerous to mention, have never been compensated in spite of the fact that the US has paid compensation to Native American Nations and Japanese Americans (however paltry and insufficient). Even now, with a President of Afrikan descent, the U.S. government is doing everything within its power to bury the issue of reparations and deny that the trans-Atlantic slave trade and chattel slavery are crimes against humanity as declared in the Durban Declaration and Plan of Action. The U.S. refuses to engage in critical United Nations proceedings seeking to address restitution and reparations for colonialism, enslavement, and institutionalized racism like the Durban Review Conference held in Geneva, Switzerland in April 2009.

The vast majority of Afrikan people in the U.S. are still at the bottom of every major social indicator of wealth and progress in this country. No honest assessment of these conditions can come to any other conclusion except that these conditions are the direct result of discriminatory policies endorsed andenforced by the government.

N’COBRA has kept reparations alive and well in the consciousness of Afrikan people. It has led the fight and the demand that compensation is due when one nation entraps, enslaves and oppresses a people. And further, when those people fight back and resist those people are freedom fighters and when captured are Political Prisoners and Prisoners of War and should be treated as such under international law. Today the U.S. still holds many of our captured Freedom Fighters in prison as Political Prisoners, but refuses to recognize them assuch, in accordance with international law. Again N’COBRA has recognized and put at the forefront of the demand for reparations, the freedom of our political prisoners. N’COBRA recognizes that no people can be free or liberated unless they remember and continue to struggle to free its fighters behind enemy lines. We recognize N’COBRA's historic and current work in this struggle and wish it continued strength in this long and difficult work. We continue to pledge our full support for its efforts to repair and reunite our people.

Atlanta, Georgia

Saturday, May 30, 2009

The Malcolm X Festival, organized by the Atlanta Chapter of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM), was a huge success. Aided by sunny skies and temperatures in the 80’s,the surrounding Atlanta West End community came by the thousands to spend theday in fellowship, listen to the beat of the drum, taste the foods of the Afrikan Diaspora, support Afrikan centered businesses and community initiatives and partake in discussion about which way forward for Afrikan people.

The Malcolm X Festival was started 20 years ago to celebrate brother Malcolm’s life and hisgoal of self-determination and self sufficiency for the Black nation. The festival allows both of these important ideas to flourish, with community members gathered together to enjoy the industriousness of the venders, reestablish ties of unity and communion. In addition to enjoying the day many people signed up to join the organization and participate in future events and activities.

Campaign to Elect Chokwe Lumumba Victory Statement
Events
4622_107937760350_631425350_3057101_6044671_n.jpg

A genuine peoples victory was won on Tuesday, May 19th, 2009, the 84th Birthday of Malcolm X (El Hajj Malik El-Shabazz). The people’s lawyer, attorney Chokwe Lumumba, was elected to the City Council in Jackson, Mississippi representing Ward 2.

The foundation of this victory was laid by the decades of dedicated community service and organizing that Attorney Lumumba, the New Afrikan People’s Organization (NAPO), and the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) have engaged in Jackson. The victory was secured through the broad mass mobilization and fundraising efforts of the campaigns organizers, supporters and allies in Jackson and throughout the United States.

By electing Lumumba the residents of Ward 2 declared that they want a new leadership committed to their social and economic interests, and that of the City, with a proven ability to organize, motivate, and educate for positive change. By organizing themselves into People’s Assemblies in support of the election campaign, the people of Ward 2 have begun to build and exercise the power necessary to address their needs and solve the problems of their ward. Through the vehicle of the People’s Assembly the residents of Ward 2 have determined that the People’s Platform is THEIR Platform.

A new, independent, and potentially transformative force is being built in Jackson through the combined power of the Council office and the People’s Assembly. This force will not be bound by the confines of the two-party system. The building of this force will advance the development of a genuine participatory democracy that will help our people fulfill all their human rights, including the economic, social and cultural rights so often denied in the United States.

We hope this victory and the development of this model will not only inspire but also help build a new force in Black and progressive politics in the United States, one that will put the needs of people and the environment before profits. The victory on May 19th was just the first step. Now the hard work of utilizing the limited political power this victory enables to transform Ward 2 and the entire city of Jackson and beyond begins. We hope everyone who reads and or hears about this victory will pass on this critical news and join us in the concrete work of building viable alternatives for the people of Ward 2, Jackson, the South and entire country by any means necessary!
