MXGM Legal Clinic Recap

On Saturday, December 1st, the People’s Self-Defense Campaign (PSDC) of the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement’s (MXGM) NY chapter reignited their tradition of hosting free legal clinics in Central Brooklyn. About a dozen Brooklyn residents came out to Freebrook Academy and received free legal advice from three volunteer attorneys who shared their expertise in the areas of criminal, housing, and child advocacy law. A few additional attendees came from throughout the tri-state area seeking ways to work with PSDC members and learn how to host similar events in their own neighborhoods.

Originally founded in 1990 in Jackson, Mississippi, the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement (MXGM) is a black organization whose mission is to defend human rights and promote self-determination in our community. The NY Chapter was founded in 1995 and has since been working to educate, support and organize our communities in the midst of killings and other forms of violence committed by the state through systems of white supremacy, capitalism, and patriarchy. In keeping with those aims, our free legal clinics give people the opportunity to meet us, learn how to get involved, feel empowered and information ranging from suing the NYPD to dealing with a difficult landlord. The PSDC also does copwatch patrols in Central Brooklyn and hosts free Know Your Rights and Cop Watch trainings for the community.
